Music Generator - Top 10 Emo Albums

e-Mo Magazine lists the top ten “emo” albums your iPod would be naked without.

Clarity
Jimmy Eat World
1999
If you're a fan of the Drew Barrymore romcom “Never Been Kissed”, then you'd no doubt recognise the Jimmy Eat World track “Lucky Denver Mint”. This radio-friendly choon introduced the band to mainstream audiences, under the Capitol label (who dropped Jimmy in 2001. Bapheads). Clarity was the band's follow-up to Static Prevails, both of which were re-released in 2007 with bonus tracks. It was a more accomplished album than its predecessor, with stronger song writing and a heady blend of heartfelt vocals and rock injections. A perfect introduction the “emo” scene.

Panic At the Disco
A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
2005
There aren't many acts that become an international success on the strength of their first album, but that's exactly what happened to these lads from Las Vegas. This astounding album was pure Viagra for the ears, with its unique electro pop-punk vibe and tongue-in-cheek lyrics (“What a shame the poor groom's bride is a whore”. Classic). A Fever You Can't Sweat Out was the soundtrack to 2006, and marked Panic as one of the most influential bands of the noughties.

My Chemical Romance
Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
2004
Three Cheers was MCR's second studio album. It saw the band shift from its post-hardcore roots to a more mainstream sound. Whilst this caused the underground music community to turn its back on the band, MCR gained huge popularity with the masses after the release of I'm Not Okay.  Gerard Way's angst-filled vocals were the perfect accompaniment to the songs raw lyrics, and catapulted him into the hearts of many a girl. With themes of love and loss, Three Cheers captured the essence of “emo” and is a must have in your collection.

Fall Out Boy
From Under The Cork Tree
2005
It's hard to imagine a time before Pete Wentz's million dollar smile and Patrick Stumps soulful voice, such was the impact of their second album From Under A Cork Tree on the world. Shifting over 2.5 million albums in the USA alone, the album was a sugar-high of scrumptious ear-candy. Packed full of witty lyrics and catchy-hooks, From Under The Cork Tree is a classic of the genre.

Kill Hannah
Until There's Nothing Left Of Us
2006
Currently touring with Aiden, Kill Hannah are set to break the UK market with the release of their   superb second album Until There's Nothing Left Of Us in March. Channelling The Cure and The Smiths, Kill Hannah gives 80's synth a millennium makeover to great effect. The album has a good  balance of high and low energy songs, the highlight being Lips Like Morphine, an uber sexy song that'll leave you as breathless as Mat Devine's divine voice.

Taking Back Sunday
Tell All Your Friends
2002
It may have taken a year for TBS's debut album to reach the Billboard charts, but during that time the emo crew built a dedicated following thanks to their mix of pop-punk energy and oodles of  angst. Although a little cliche-tastic on the lyric front, TATF showed that Taking Back Sunday was a band to take notice of with their bouncy riffs, catchy tunes and proficient vocals. A good place to start your love affair with TBS.

30 Seconds To Mars
A Beautiful Lie
2005 (UK - 2007)
Actor/musicians rarely receive much critical or commercial acclaim. Namely because listening to them is like Chinese water torture for the most part. Jared Leto is one of the few exceptions to the rule, with his hugely successful band 30 Seconds To Mars. The groups' second album, A Beautiful Lie, may have taken three years to record, but all good things come to those who wait. Infused with 90's alt-rock influences, the album is wonderfully conceptualised and highly polished. Leto's beautiful, angst-filled voice is the perfect accompaniment to the album's radio-friendly tracks, leaving you in no doubt that Leto is more than just a pretty face.

Brand New
Deja Entendu
2004
Brand New's sophomore album  regularly makes it onto people's top ten “emo” album lists, and for good reason. The amusingly titled Deja Entendu (“already heard”) may be a little on the nose (there's no doubt that the album channels the likes of Taking Back Sunday and Coldplay (Urgh! - Editor), but it's still a fine example of the genre. With a juxtoposition of sounds from atmospheric to punky guitar riffs, guttural to melodic vocals; it's an album that keeps you guessing throughout.

My Chemical Romance
The Black Parade
2006
Their second appearance on our list sees MCR's alter-egos The Black Parade take the reigns in this grandiose concept album, which charts the death and afterlife of our protagonist. Produced by American Idiots' Rob Cavallo, The Black Parade takes the genre to giddy new heights, mixing elements of pop-punk with 70's prog-rock. Tied together with satirical lyrics, the Black Parade is a masterpiece. Simple as.

Paramore
Riot
2007
Paramore may be pissing us off at the moment, with their lack of love for their UK fanbase, but America's sweetheart Hayley Williams certainly knows how to belt out a memorable tune. Their follow-up album to the hugely successful All We Know Is Falling isn't a giant leap in terms of musical experimentation, but the songs are as catchy as the Ebola virus. You can't help but sing along, as Hayley's vocals soar over synthesized pop beats and power chords. A bit of a guilty pleasure, but even emos need a moment of light entertainment.
